Long Island Power Regulators Look At Public Utility Option

Stephen Nessen / WNYC The Long Island Power Authority will consider moving to a fully public utility option in response to failures by its contractor, PSEG Long Island, to restore power after Tropical Storm Isaias this summer. LIPA laid out its options in a report this week. They include a restructure of the current contract with PSEG Long Island to require more oversight, replacing the contract with a new company, or privatization. New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele of Sag Harbor said he’s supported the public option for years. “It s the most accountable option. And obviously, it appears that it can save money. And it was the original intent of the law when the Legislature enacted it almost 35 years ago,” Thiele said.

They are “reeling from the financial devastation of the virus and are experiencing severe losses in revenue, he said. As chairman of the Assembly’s Local Governments Committee, he pledged to fight for funding he said is vital to providing municipal services on which taxpayers depend, Mr. Thiele said.

Cuomo Vetoes Bill That Gave L I Towns Authority To Ban Sand Mining; Makes Felony Illegal Dumping

Courtesy of Pixabay New York Governor Andrew Cuomo vetoed a bill this week that would have given local governments more control to regulate sand mines in their jurisdiction. The bill would have given local governments the ability to prohibit mining when groundwater contamination caused by the site was documented. The legislation was pushed by towns and villages in eastern Long Island. More than half of the 23 active-permitted mines on Long Island are in the towns of Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and East Hampton. The bill was lobbied against by the region’s construction industry. The governor said the legislation, as is, was “expansive” and “ill-defined.”
