Newport home remodel

Fred Albert Newport Home magazine A few years ago, Jill and Barry Martin went shopping for a house in Newport so they could indulge Barry’s passion for sailing. Although the couple loved old houses, they weren’t looking to tackle a makeover so much as a makeunder Jill’s term for a light, cosmetic touch-up where you slap on a new coat of paint and call it a day.   The house they ended up buying was not one of those.   The Queen Anne–style residence in Newport’s Kay-Catherine neighborhood had been remodeled several times over the past 130+ years, and spent much of its life as a two-family home (with the narrow, closed-off staircase to show for it). By the time the Martins found the place in 2019, much of the history had been stripped away, and years of renters had left their mark.

Little Compton renovation

Fred Albert Newport Life magazine Little Compton is one of the few places where you could get lost and not mind it a bit. Back roads beckon you with verdant vistas and venerable homes in a happy marriage of country charm and cosmopolitan mien.  For a health care executive who had summered in Little Compton his whole life, buying a home there felt like an adventure right out of Goldilocks. For several years, he visited house after house, but nothing was quite right: This one lacked character. That one was too ostentatious. Another needed too much work.   You might conclude that the house he ended up buying was “just right.” But life is no fairy tale, and the homeowner concedes that the home, which had sat empty for years, was actually “kind of gross.”

Teacher Unions: We re Under Attack From Legislature

West Virginia Public Broadcasting Leaders from several of West Virginia’s largest teacher unions had sharp criticism for bills under consideration in the state legislature. They voiced their concerns to the state Board of Education on Wednesday. “Our educators have worked harder in this pandemic year than anyone could have ever asked,” said Dale Lee, president of the West Virginia Educators Association and a special education teacher at Princeton High School. “They’ve worked harder and reached out to more children than anybody could have imagined. Our educators are heroes and they’re being treated with such disrespect. It’s shameful.”
