KAREN EKIS, 68 Apr 16, 2021 8:13 AM Karen Jean Ekis, 68, of Strongstown, passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021 at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville. A daughter of Harry and Mildred Bennett Ekis, she was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Indiana. Karen’s passion for animals, travel, family and charity led her to a very full life. As a young adult, she traveled throughout Pennsylvania to showcase her barrel racing skills, winning several awards along the way. Her love for travel eventually took her to the Carolinas, where she pursued a career as a cross-country truck driver. Karen was an incredibly talented seamstress. She and her mother combined that with her compassion and love for charity by sewing hundreds of beautiful comforters for premature infants and wounded veterans.

Forbes Hospital recognized for its efforts to promote breastfeeding

Forbes Hospital recently became a facility recognized for its efforts to promote and encourage breastfeeding. The Monroeville hospital was named a Keystone 10 facility, a program developed under the state Department of Health (DOH) to assist birthing hospitals “in implementing evidence-based maternity care practice, with a goal of improving breastfeeding care and rates, and ultimately improving the health of mothers and babies.” The state DOH partnered with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop the Keystone 10 initiative, according to its website. It was modeled after the Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Initiative, which helps hospitals improve policies and processes that affect breastfeeding outcomes.

Thousands receive covid-19 vaccine at Monroeville Convention Center

Jeannie Hall-Harris did a lot of praying going into Tuesday’s mass-vaccination event in Monroeville. “I was hesitant at first,” she said, moments after receiving her first dose of Pfizer’s covid-19 vaccine. She was one of 5,100 people who received the shot at the Monroeville Convention Center, which partnered with Allegheny Health Network and the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce for the event that was scheduled for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hall-Harris of Penn Hills is 65, which puts her in Phase 1A, the state’s first wave of people who qualify for the vaccine. She said she also has high blood pressure.
