Pa parking-protected bike lane bill named in memory of Pittsburgher Susan Hicks

On Oct. 23, 2015, Susan Hicks was riding her bike in Oakland the exact way Pennsylvania law required her to: as if she were driving a car. Back then, the configuration on Forbes Avenue was not friendly to cyclists, and Hicks, a 34-year-old University of Pittsburgh educator, pulled her bike behind an SUV and waited for a left-turn signal at a red light at Bigelow Boulevard. Then, a speeding driver slammed into a car behind her, causing a chain reaction that resulted in her death.

Dunkin opens another store in Oakland

The overnight snow couldn’t stop Dunkin’ from opening its second Oakland store Monday. It’s the 64th location owned by Heartland Restaurant Group and will employ 30 people. It becomes the second location in Oakland, joining the one at Forbes Avenue on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The new store is located at 4560 Centre Ave. “We’re excited to bring this new location to Oakland,” said Anthony Braun, COO and CFO of Heartland Restaurant Group, a Dunkin’ franchisee. “Although the pandemic has been tough for the economy globally, Dunkin’ has been growing in the region throughout 2020, and we plan to continue that growth through 2021.”

10 movie favorites starring Pittsburgh

What makes Pittsburgh such an attractive movie location? Tax credits for film companies are just the beginning, says Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office. “We have such a diversity of locations. Pittsburgh can look like any place in the world,” she says. “The only things we don’t have are a beach and a desert. “We do New York better than New York,” she says. “We’ve been San Francisco, Paris, Ukraine and Atlanta.” There’s the beauty of the city viewed from the West End Overlook or Mt. Washington and downtown’s blend of modern and historical architecture, she says. Drive for an hour and you have mountains, small towns, farmland and other attractive settings.

Or am I looking at this year through rose coloured glasses? So here are my top 10 performers of 2020 that were featured in the

Stories of the Year: From detection to vaccine, coronavirus dominated 2020

Seldom is a subject such an obvious choice for story of the year. But unlike 2001’s 9/11 or 2016’s election, the coronavirus story kept happening day after day after day. Like the virus itself, the story just wouldn’t stop. It appears it will consume 2021 as well. From reports of a “new illness” in China in January to the approval and distribution of vaccines in December, the tale of covid-19 is complex. It’s been an incredible, agonizing, frustrating, infuriating, daunting and deadly journey. Coronavirus’ story actually began in December 2019, when 41 cases were first identified in Wuhan, China. Many researchers believe the virus originated in bats, although further studies are being conducted.
