FORD RIVER A home on 9th Lane in Ford River was destroyed by fire Tuesday but only minor injuries were reported.
At approximately 4:57 a.m. Tuesday, the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fully-engulfed house fire in Ford River, according to the department. Firefighters were on scene for about six hours, and the home was deemed a total loss.
The homeowner was transported by Rampart EMS to OSF St. Francis Hospital for minor injuries and was treated and released.
The Ford River Volunteer Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Escanaba Public Safety, Michigan State Police, the Delta COunty Sheriff’s Office, Rampart EMS, UPPCO, and Delta County Central Dispatch. Food and coffee for the firefighters was providede by McDonald’s

ESCANABA Nancy Mathews is a pioneer. In 1954, the Ford River resident was among school children who received test doses of the polio vaccine in the 1950s. In 2021, Mathews was among the first in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
This month Mathews arrived at Bay de Noc Community College’s Joseph Heirman University Center for her COVID-19 vaccination carrying two significant tokens given to her 67 years before. A photo of Mathews receiving her COVID-19 vaccine shows her proudly holding a card and a button both declaring her a “Polio Pioneer.”

ESCANABA Baybank President and CEO Michael Nardi announces the promotion of Julie Sacheck to vice president. Sacheck began her career at Baybank in 2002 as a customer service representative. Over the years she was promoted to office manager, BSA officer, loan officer, and most recently held the title of assistant vice president. She is located in Baybank’s Gladstone office and primarily deals with mortgage lending.
Sacheck was born in Ford River and graduated from Escanaba High School. She went on to earn a cosmetology license and worked in that industry for two years before joining the Baybank team.
She currently resides in Escanaba with her fiance Matt Hughes, daughter Madison and stepson, Andrew Hughes.
