The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the establishment of public Wi-Fi networks across the country. These would be provided through Public Data Offices (PDOs). This Central government s scheme is called the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) and is being seen as an attempt by the government to elevate wireless internet connectivity in the country.

PM-WANI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet approved the setting up of public Wi-Fi networks across the length and breadth of the country on Wednesday, December 9. The public network will set up by the public data office aggregators (PDOAs) to provide Wi-Fi service through the public data offices (PDOs) spread throughout the country. The public Wi-Fi network service will be known as PM Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (WANI) scheme. The Cabinet said that the initiative will provide a boost to ease of doing business and employment opportunities. The move is also said to accelerate the proliferation of broadband internet services through a public Wi-Fi network and is another step towards Digital India.
