Bob Russell, prominent lacrosse figure in Madison and Connecticut, dies at 69

Bob Russell, prominent lacrosse figure in Madison and Connecticut, dies at 69 Bob Russell, during his induction into the Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation in 2016. Bob Russell, a prominent figure in lacrosse for decades in the state and beyond, died Tuesday. He was 69. Former players and their parents left remembrances on the death notice at Madison’s Swan Funeral Home. One said Russell had quietly recommended her son to the college where he now plays. Another said his sons always called him “Coach Russell, Dad’s First Coach.” The Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation inducted Russell into its Hall of Fame in 2016, noting that he was the longest-serving president of CONNY, the Connecticut New York Youth Lacrosse Association. He served on several US Lacrosse executive committees and was an assistant coach at Hand.

Conard’s Gavin Sherry earns Gatorade award for cross country Peter Paguaga | April 15, 2021 Conard junior Gavin Sherry has been named the 2020-21 Gatorade Connecticut Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Gatorade announced on Thursday morning.  This is the second straight year that Sherry has been named the Gatorade Connecticut Boys Cross Country runner of the Year. He won the Northeast High School Club Championship this past season with a time of 15:13.2. He also finished in second place at the East Coast Championship with a time of 15:40.5. Sherry has a 4.36 GPA and plays the trombone in school. He has volunteered locally for a couple of different community service initiatives.

No. 3 Northwest Catholic topped No. 2 Windsor, 78-74, led by 35 points from junior guard Matt Curtis. Joe attended the game in West Hartford and gives us his take.  Also, No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven went down to rival Fairfield Prep in the SCC and No. 8 Kolbe Cathedral held off rival Immaculate. We touch on all of those results and look ahead to the final two weeks of the season.
