A $20 million high-rise apartment building was saved from being destroyed in Fairfield County by quick-working firefighters.
The fire, at the Alto Fairfield Metro Complex on Kings Highway, in Fairfield, began around 9:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, the Fairfield Fire Department said.
Fighterfightes received word that the fire started on the roof-top deck and arrived on the scene within four minutes, the department said.
First arriving units found smoke showing from the top of the roofline and the fire alarm system sounding. The residents were evacuating the building because of an activated pull station by a quick-acting resident, said Fire Chief Denis McCarthy.

Report shows Fairfield Fire Department averaged about 38 calls per day in 2020
That equals about 38 calls each day.
The department responded to about 6,800 calls in 2000.
Station 37, the busiest fire station in the county, responded to 4,730 calls, according to the report. It’s at 1200 Kentucky St., next to the library.
“We expect company response from this station to once again fall within the top 100 busiest in the U.S. for Firehouse Magazine’s annual run survey,” according to the report.
Station 41, 3200 N. Texas St., handled 21% of the calls; Station 39, 1974 Huntington Drive, 15.6%; Station 40, 2555 Hilborn Road, 14.8%; and Station 35, 600 Lopes Road, 13.1%.
