Dombrowski and the Giro is a career-long love affair.
In 2012, the Virginia native became the first and only American to win the “Baby Giro,” beating back future grand tour winner Fabio Aru and a pack full of future WorldTour professionals.
That victory cranked up the hype machine, and he landed him on the powerful Team Sky franchise. He and Ian Boswell would join Danny Pate on the peloton’s powerhouse as the lone Americans. Dombrowski couldn’t find much space on the superstar-packed Sky lineup, however, and moved across to the Slipstream organization in 2015.
The Giro d’Italia was always central in his narrative.
In cycling’s modern era, generational winners ruled over each decade since the 1960s to dominate grand tour racing.

Grand tour racing season begins this weekend with the Giro d’Italia clicking into gear Saturday in Torino. The Tour de France and Vuelta a España are not far behind.
The 2021 “corsa rosa” boasts a solid start list that should deliver an exciting three weeks of racing. Though defending champion Tao Geoghegan Hart isn’t back, the presence of Bernal, Peter Sagan, Vincenzo Nibali, Simon Yates, and Remco Evenepoel assure there will be plenty of reasons to tune in every day.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the oldest of the cycling monuments, is set to take place this Sunday in the Ardennes region of Belgium. Team Qhubeka ASSOS (www.TeamQhubeka.com) will line-up at the UCI World Tour classic with an experienced group of climbers.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege dates to 1892, with this year seeing the 107th running of the event. Covering a distance of 259km, the route includes a number of cycling famous climbs, like Cote de La Redoute and Cote de la Roche-aux-Faucons among others, making this a monument of cycling for the climbing specialists.
While the first 160km of the race is by no means flat, the majority of the notable climbs do come in the final 100km of the race, making La Doyenne (The old lady), one of the most arduous single day bike races in the world.
