Mick Schumacher has been placed at Haas for the 2021 Formula 1 season with the intention of developing him to become a Ferrari driver in the future, says the Scuderia’s team principal Mattia Binotto.
The 2020 Formula 2 champion and a Ferrari junior, Schumacher will drive alongside Nikita Mazepin at Haas next season in what Binotto hopes is the next step towards following in his father Michael’s footsteps at Ferrari.
“Mick Schumacher will be one of the drivers for Haas next year, which for us is a great opportunity, showing the strength of collaboration we’ve got,” Binotto explained. “Mick is part of our FDA [Ferrari Driver Academy] and the FDA program is not there to develop drivers for F1, but it’s there to develop drivers that one day may drive a Ferrari seat, a red car.

Mick Schumacher never thought he would be preparing to battle with Sebastian Vettel in Formula 1, but that is what will happen in 2021.
Schumacher is set to make his debut in the series with Haas in 2021 after winning the 2020 Formula 2 Championship.
As a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, Schumacher has spent time working with the same team Sebastian Vettel called home for the past six seasons, although their connection of course goes much deeper.
In the earlier stages of his career, Vettel always looked up to Mick’s father, Michael Schumacher, and saw the seven-time former World Champion very much as a mentor.

Although his plans are yet to be finalised, new Ferrari test driver Callum Ilott hopes to take part in a few FP1 sessions in 2021.
After finishing runner-up to fellow Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher in the 2020 Formula 2 Championship, Ilott missed out on a Formula 1 race seat for 2021 but still landed a very respectable role as Ferrari’s 2021 test driver.
And as it turns out, to be part of the Ferrari Formula 1 team is a dream come true for Ilott, a dream that was born all the way back in 2009.
“Obviously a great privilege. It’s finally out there to public knowledge,” he said while appearing on the At The Controls podcast.
