We’re about two decades into an era that history will remember as That Time Humans Demanded At Least Four Comic Book Movies A Year. (I’m guessing this era will be remembered for other things, too, but I’m trying to stay positive for once.) My colleagues and I talk about comics characters pretty much every day, and those conversations lead me to mull a specific type of comic book movie: the Superhero Origin Story.
Before I even knew what was happening, I found myself drawn, inexorably, as if by some force powerful destiny,
to rank those stories. In reverse order from worst to best.
UWFI CONTENDERS SERIES
The five-part UWFi Rules Contenders Series airs every Wednesday on IndependentWrestling.TV. The series features a group of Paradigm Pro Wrestling roster members competing with each other, and competing with a group of contenders looking to earn spots on the Paradigm Pro roster, in an empty arena setting with a sports-first style of presentation.
As implied by the name, every bout in the series is contested under UWFi Rules. Named for the now defunct Union of Professional Wrestling Forces International promotion in Japan, the UWFi used a unique rule-set that’s essentially a hybrid of traditional professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. Under UWFi rules, there are no pinfalls – matches may only be won via knock-out, TKO, submission, or points.
While we await some kind of official announcement from Marvel and/or Sony, we can now throw more rumoured names into the mix with The Illuminerdi claiming that
Spider-Man star Willem Dafoe will be back as the Green Goblin along with
Spider-Man 3’s Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. Meanwhile, reports on social media are suggesting that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio body double has also been spotted on the Atlanta, Georgia set.
Whether there’s truth to any of this, we shall have to wait and see, but if the reports are accurate then it seems we may just be one villain short of a Multiverse version of the Sinister Six… Michael Keaton’s Vulture, perhaps? Or Topher Gra
