The Fiji Times » Tertiary education – Who bears the burden

Mahendra Chaudhry 17 April, 2021, 7:15 pm Members of the FNU Student Association during their Multi-Cultural Events at the FNU New Lecture Theatre, Koronivia Campus. Picture: ATU RASEA Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this week proudly proclaimed to the students of the Fiji National University that since 2014 his government had assisted more than 22,000 FNU students through the TELS and Toppers schemes. He was speaking as chief guest at the FNU Students Association Multicultural event held at the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in Koronivia on Monday. While the bald statistics thus stated may sound impressive, the stark realities behind the Toppers and TELS schemes is not something a government should be proud of.

The Fiji Times » Slaves to the system – Cane growers emphatically proclaim they want an end to enslavement

Kamal Iyer Sugarcane cutters take a break to quench their thirst. Picture: FILE In searing heat and sweltering temperatures at Malele, Tavua just after midday on Thursday, April 8, 2021, a group of cane growers decided they have had enough of broken promises, falsehoods, fake assurances and freebies to buy their respect and dignity during general election fever. “We are broken; we are crippled; the Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) and Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) are toothless and work against us (growers) despite the fact that they should be working for us; we demand SCGC elections”, one said. “We demand at least $20 per tonne of cane as fourth cane payment in May to help us prepare for harvesting and planting new crop; and we will not sit quietly and accept any excuse or refusal of our demands by government because it will mean our demise as growers”. Such was their resolve. In a nutshell, ‘Give us what is ours and stop fooling around because we have had enough’.

Opposition member Pio Tikoduadua is calling on the government to stop the blame game. Tikoduadua has questioned government on why they are pretending they weren’t aware of drafting of the police bill. He said everybody in Fiji knows that nothing happens in the government unless the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama or Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says so. “Last week the Local Government Minister Premila Kumar blamed an un-named “consultant” for the release of municipal market regulations imposing huge fees on market vendors,” he said “Kumar said the regulations were not aligned with the government’s vision.  Now, the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is saying that the Police Bill does not reflect the views of the government and will be withdrawn.
