Picture: FILE On March 21 1978, The Fiji Times ran a story about former unionist and parliamentarian Apisai Tora who was released from jail after being granted bail of $500 by the Fiji Court of Appeal. Mr Tora was serving a 12-month prison term imposed by the Lautoka Magistrates Court in October 1977 after being convicted of violating the sugar industry ordinance. The Fiji Court of Appeal sat in Suva and granted Mr Tora bail, pending the hearing of an appeal against his conviction by the same court. An appeal against his conviction was dismissed by the Supreme Court in Lautoka in December 1977. Bail applications were also refused by the magistrates court and the Supreme Court.

Bhan Pratap Singh is the new CEO of the FSC Bhan Pratap Singh is the new CEO of the FSC Bhan Pratap Singh is the new Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Sugar Corporation. Singh spent 18 years at FSC starting as Shift Chemist and progressing to Assistant Product Superintendent and then as General Manager with responsibility covering all the mills from 2005 until 2011. Singh also spent his last two years at FSC as Deputy CEO and General Manager Operations before leaving FSC to become CEO of Pacific Fishing Compnay (PAFCO) a position he has held till date. Singh will start work on the 22nd of next month.

ANISH CHAND Picture: HFC Bank Government is guaranteeing a $20 million overdraft facility given by HFC Bank to the Fiji Sugar Corporation. This is according to the FSC’s 2020 annual report under “interest- bearing loans and borrowings”. “The corporation has secured an overdraft facility of $20 million with HFC,” the report read. “The facility is secured by Government guarantee and floating charge over all the corporation’s assets.” The financial statement as at May 31, 2020, revealed FSC took out a loan of $42.4 million from the Czarnikow Group Ltd for operational expenditures and grower cane payments. “This loan is secured through assignment of 2020 season contract and will be repaid through the second and third shipment of sugar for the 2020 season (financial year 2021).”
