Picture: RAKESH KUMAR A Citizens Budget Guide was launched today aimed at improving people’s perception of budget and to promote accountability and transparency in public financial management. The guide is developed by the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) with the support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (PIANGO). The European Union (EU)-funded guide will promote good governance and verify the effectiveness of public funds in compliance with people’s needs.

The child rights organisation partnered with the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) and Vodafone Fiji to reach more than 19,000 households with digital cash transfers. Save the Children Fiji CEO Shairana Ali said working with the FCOSS and Vodafone Fiji would allow for fast and efficient support to vulnerable families affected by the pandemic. “Save the Children’s partnership with digital mobile money company like Vodafone means that we can quickly reach the most vulnerable families across Fiji impacted by COVID-19. Save the Children’s expertise in cash transfer and Vodafone’s huge reach across Fiji means families will soon feel the relief they desperately need during these trying times,” she said.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Tuesday, the COVID-19 assistance by Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) started last April. As of today, the Fund has paid out 109 million Fijian dollars (about 53.4 million U.S. dollars) for all the COVID-19 assistance so far. We are running various continuation of phases and government top-up is at about 80 million Fijian dollars (about 39.2 million U.S. dollars), said Jaoji Koroi, chief executive of the FNPF.
