Pinch point removal completed on Manchester’s busy A57 Replacement of the former rail bridge has been completed above the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton, Manchester as part of a £5.9M scheme allowing the route to be widened, reducing traffic congestion. Until now, a 300m section of the road was narrowed from dual carriageway to a single lane in either direction where the route ran under a 19 th century rail bridge. According to EWCE, much of the abutment work and earthworks were undertaken during a pre-construction phase to minimise impact on road users. Adding certainty to the programme saw the contractor upgrade the sheet piles used for the new 150m long, 6m high retaining walls to ensure driveability and undertake the piling work from an innovative temporary works structure that saw the rig positioned at a higher level than the road to further reduce impact on traffic flow. The piling work was also undertaken using a Giken silent pile press with water jetting to minimise disruptio

Place North West | Eric Wright completes £5 9m East Manchester civils project

Neil Tague The Lancashire construction group’s civil engineering division has finished improvement works for the city council to remove the notorious pinch-point on the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton. The pinch point had been created by a 19th century railway bridge and retaining wall, while the solution saw a replacement 26-tonne steel foot and cycle bridge lifted into place. The new bridge forms part of the Fallowfield Loop walking and cycleway, additions to which are an important part of the city region’s Bee Network plans. Additional works included moving the retaining wall and realigning the carriageway on the busy route through East Manchester. The work was delivered to programme.
