Biden Directs Education Funding to Community Colleges, a Key Lifeline

National enrollment at community colleges has declined by about 10 percent during the pandemic, far outstripping the drop in overall college enrollment. Some community colleges in poorer communities have lost as much as 20 percent of their student body. Jill Biden, the first lady, is a community college professor and has long been a proponent of increased funding for community colleges and has been promoting the idea in visits around the country. While generally consistent with Mr. Biden’s campaign blueprint, the proposal omits any reference to erasing college debt, a move promoted by a number of congressional Democrats, some who want to forgive $50,000 in federal student loans for many borrowers. The president had partially endorsed the idea during last year’s presidential campaign, proposing $10,000 in loan forgiveness.

What is the next step after city s discrimination apology?

Forsyth County Commissioner Don Martin, a Republican, says he can’t see voting in favor of a resolution apologizing for past discrimination of Black people, nor supporting the concept of reparations. Democratic County Commissioner Fleming El-Amin likes the idea, and thinks one form reparations could take locally might be support for scholarships to Forsyth Technical Community College or Winston-Salem State University. Both commissioners talked about the topic in the wake of last week’s passage by the Winston-Salem City Council of a resolution apologizing for the city’s role in discrimination against Black people. The idea has not come before the county board of commissioners, but if it does, Martin and El-Amin still might find some mutual ground despite the distance between their positions: Martin said he can support helping people who are disadvantaged with educational needs.

Zach Blizard: Research keeps this millennial in Winston-Salem

For years, Winston-Salem leaders have talked about the need to keep native millennials here while also attracting new ones. I’m nearly 30 years old, with most of those years spent right here in Forsyth County. I’ve chosen to stay here, even though an hour or so east is a major hub for innovative social science research, the Research Triangle. For sure, the opportunities there are attractive and alluring. Many of my classmates from graduate school are working there now. However, the reason I stay is that, here in Winston-Salem, many people and organizations are dedicating substantial resources to understanding the challenges facing this community, while offering and researching innovative solutions to them. Hence, Winston-Salem offers a lot for millennials like me, especially those with a data research background: the opportunity to tackle real challenges using quantitative methods and the opportunity to potentially solve real-world challenges affecting our own community.
