Taipei, April 15 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan rose sharply Thursday by more than 200 points to close above the 17,000 mark, as investors ignored the mixed U.S. markets overnight, dealers said.
Buying was seen across the board, with large-cap tech stocks gaining momentum in late trading and old economy and financial stocks attracting buying amid optimism about a cyclical recovery, dealers said.
The Taiex, the benchmark weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended up 210.76 points, or 1.25 percent, at 17,076.73, after moving between 16,851.06 and 17,076.73. Turnover totaled NT$360.96 billion (US$12.7 billion).
The market opened down 0.09 percent at the day s low, in the wake of a mixed U.S. market, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a modest 0.16 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 0.99 percent Wednesday, dealers said.
