If imprisoned Palestinian leader, Marwan Barghouti, becomes the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), the status quo will change substantially. For Israel, as well as for the current PA President, Mahmoud Abbas, such a scenario is more dangerous than another strong Hamas showing in the upcoming Palestinian parliamentary elections.
The long-delayed elections, now scheduled for 22 May and 31 July respectively, will not only represent a watershed moment for the fractured Palestinian body politic, but also for the Fatah Movement which has dominated the PA since its inception in 1994. The once revolutionary movement has become a shell of its former self under the leadership of Abbas, whose only claim to legitimacy was a poorly contested election in January 2005, following the death of former Fatah leader and PA President, Yasser Arafat.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) will never backtrack from heading to general elections because they are democratic and popular rights, PA spokesperson Nabil Abu-Rudieneh said yesterday.

Voice of Palestine radio, he reiterated the position of PA President Mahmoud Abbas which was declared through the presidential decrees related to elections.
Meanwhile, he reiterated that the Fatah Movement insists on running for the elections on one united list, adding that it hoped that the outcome of the election will meet the needs and desires of the Palestinian people.

Abbas’ Fatah Movement regularly reminds Palestinians that it has not put down its weapons, reveres the rifle, and is committed to destroying Israel. In numerous statements, Fatah officials have expressed their pride in terror attacks and murders of Israelis, as exposed by Palestinian Media Watch.
Three videos posted recently by Fatah on different Facebook pages are examples of such promotion of violence. Photos of youth and adults marching with assault rifles are mixed with images of Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas while speakers refer to all of Israel as “Palestine” and promise Martyrdom for “Palestine”:

President Abbas chairs meeting of Fatah Central Committee
RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 25, 2021 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas chaired today evening a meeting of the Central Committee of ruling Fatah Movement at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.
The Abbas briefed the attendees of the the latest political developments, including efforts to mobilize Arab and international support to the Palestinian cause in the way to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the need to solve the refugees issue in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 194.
