Arts and design major Warehouse421 greens its programme landscape

Warehouse421, the home-grown arts and design centre dedicated to showcasing and nurturing creative production across the region located in Abu Dhabi, has announced the opening of Total Landscaping, curated by Murtaza Vali.
Using an ethnographic approach, Gareth Doherty explores diverse forms of knowledge that constitute landscape architecture. Each of Doherty’s publications, including Paradoxes of Green: Landscapes of a City-State, expands the limits and scope of landscape architectural theory and design by considering human ecology alongside environmental and aesthetic concerns. Doherty’s research broadens discussions on ethnography and participatory methods by asking how a socio-cultural perspective can inspire design innovations. Consequently, his work challenges and expands the canons upon which we understand landscape architecture.

Few people in the art world advocate as much on the behalf of Middle Eastern artists as Princess Alia Al-Senussi, the scholar, curator, collector, and patron who is passionate about reconfiguring the cultural standing of international artists around the world.
Al-Senussi, who serves as a founding member of Tate’s acquisitions committee for the Middle East and North Africa and the UK and MENA Representative for Art Basel, as well as a board member for Art Dubai, the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Global Heritage Fund, has long spent her time trying to create opportunities for Arab artists to share their work and stories with a global audience.

Emirati artist Afra Al Daheri, whose work is part of The Farjam Foundation’s latest exhibit that runs until today, is often inspired by her upbringing here in the UAE. It sometimes also features in her artworks. Take, for instance, the piece ‘Absent Yet Present’, which is showing at the ‘Concepts and The Divine Abstract’ exhibition in DIFC during Art Week. It is part door from her childhood, part abstract concept.
She says: “It was one of the pieces that took the longest in my studio because I had collected the part of the door piece. from my family’s house in Al Ain.”
