where you can see the water right here, probably about 8 feet over the water, so there will be water all throughout this area. and as we go back as we join chris cuomo in miami beach as well, it does bear repeating that mayor here has expanded the evacuation zone to zone b, which is downtown south and west down river and for anybody who has not evacuated at this point but needs help in order to get to a shelter, the mayor is saying call 211. that is the number they of set up. call 211. and they are going to try to help get people to these shelters. chris, i just drove by the germane arena on i-75, there were long, long lines, and i know we ll talk to our drew griffin shortly outside there, there were long lines, hundreds of people waiting to get in. we ll be checking in soon, chris, to see if those lines are moving. a very severe situation here as
county extended that zone to zone b and that had people looking more carefully of where they were, where the hurricane is, and what the path could be. that s when a lot of people made the decision to finally, listen, i m going to go to a shelter. it created a big log jam. it was sort of a last minute decision, but a decision that really required it required the information that people did not get until this morning. so that s where that decision came from and that s what created a lot of consternation. but the county, state, police here have done a great job. they stood up, kept everybody calm. minor problems, a lot of inconvenience but everybody is inside at this huge shelter. john. that s great news, drew griffin in fort myers people inside the shelter where there is still room. so if you are listening, there is still time to get there and
the heeds and get out of here if you can. yeah. bill weir. we ll continue to check with you. i m glad that guy in that boat decided to believe his family. i was very concerned about that from the other night. i don t know if you can hear there s a police car come big with a police officer speaking on a loud speaker saying this is a mandatory evacuation zone, telling people to get out. obviously mandatory means some people aren t going to do it, they don t have to leave by law, but they are certainly strongly encouraged there. as soon as the police car starts to come by i ll maybe have jay turn the camera around so you can see it. just get a sense of what it s like here. they have expanded the evacuation zone to zone b which previously was not an evacuation zone but they are trying to get more people go. let s listen to this police car as it passes by.
recovery 25 years later from hurricane andrew, which was a devastating storm. this is three times as big. and we do have our houses that have been built to a higher standard based on what happened with that storm. we ve learned a lot about what we need to do to be prepared, and we activated. so now we re activating even more with the huge storm surge that s predicted. we have called for evacuation of 600,000 people. you know, miami s a real city. it s not just a place to go in the wintertime. you know that better than anybody. but i ve got friends who are lawyers down there and people working those big buildings just like any other major city. are those big buildings safe in a storm like this where it s going up to 175 miles an hour, or well over 100 miles an hour perhaps? are they safe in those buildings? you know, many of the downtown buildings are being evacuated. they re in the zone a or zone b, which are mandatory evacuation areas. also, we have a problem.
billions of dollars, what they re not telling you is they re giving it back to themselves. look at where we live at. they put us in zone b where all around us, to the north, south, east and west, is zone a. but all that land nobody lived there. so where the regular people live l live nobody is getting paid. we got the oil and it looks like florida got the money. bp executives are claiming, at least in the story on 60 minutes there s been a lot of fraud when it comes to the payout. bp wanted the fraud. they cut the deal to make it looklike fraud so they could appeal they wanted to become a victim instead of the villain. i told the lawyers when they cut the deal it wasn t a good deal. it was a good deal for bp. we offered to tell bp who was in the fishing industry and we offered to help them pick up the oilnd it took us about three wreex to realize they didn t want to pick up the oil. and they just refused any help. they wanted this to happen.
