We are the Most Beautiful in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful contest, and have put ourselves forward to be the first New Zealand community to be designated a UNESCO City of Design.
We are also the only town in New Zealand to celebrate International Jazz Day - another UNESCO initiative. Perhaps that is why it has been a well-kept secret.
This will be our fourth annual event, last year having been cancelled due to the lockdown.
And what an event it will be, with some 40 musicians from all over the country playing a wide variety of popular music and with many of the musicians performing together for the very first time . because jazz can do that. It adds an excitement that only improvisation can bring.

Vanisa Dhiru – the Wellington-based Kiwi-Indian champion of gender equality was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to community and gender rights as part of the New Year Honours on December 31, 2020.
Born locally in Palmerston North to a Gujarati migrant family from India, Vanisa has taken a plunge in advocacy and capacity building work, both locally and nationally, from very early in her youth and have built an influential profile with a long list of credible work in the realm of community support behind her.

Two Wellingtonians have become Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit in today’s New Year Honours List:
Sue Chetwin, for services to consumer rights.
Having begun her career in journalism, Ms Chetwin was editor of the Sunday News from 1994 to 1998, the Sunday Star-Times from 1998 to 2003, and founding editor of the Herald on Sunday from 2003 to 2005. As Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand from 2007 to 2020 she successfully campaigned for many important consumer law reforms, including prohibitions on unfair contract terms, fairness in consumer credit contracts, country of origin labelling, and controlling door knockers. She has led other successful campaigns on behalf of consumers including calling for mandatory standards for sunscreens, helping to regulate mobile truck shops, and calling out businesses on misleading claims such as greenwashing. Her commitment to consumer rights have contributed to New Zealand having a strong consumer protection ethos
