Crop Watch: Rain helps residual herbicides and slugs

Cereal drilling has been progressing well and recent rain will help with residual herbicide efficacy. However, it also raises the slug threat. Aphids are

Crop Watch: Hopes for warmer weather after rain arrives

Crop Watch: Hopes for warmer weather after rain arrives >More in © Tim Scrivener Rain has brought much-needed comfort for many crops that have struggled through a cold and very dry April, and they will hopefully benefit further as temperatures warm up. But with the rain has come an increased risk of disease, so it is crucial to plan T2 flag leaf sprays on winter wheat to control rusts and septoria. Warmer temperatures will certainly be needed to see maize crop emerging as some have sat in the ground for a month in cold and dry weather. AICC (Yorkshire) We had 22 frosts in April, which meant the whole agronomy world went into slow motion, like an extended scene from

Crop Watch: Spring drilling advances but too cold for maize

Crop Watch: Rust and septoria on the rise in wheat crops

Crop Watch: Rust and septoria on the rise in wheat crops >More in © Tim Scrivener Autumn-sown cereals are coming out of winter in a better condition than last season. However, there is plenty of septoria and yellow rust foliar diseases to be found in winter wheat crops as the T0 fungicide timing approaches. Nitrogen fertiliser has been applied to many winter crops, but in the current cool weather, crop responses have been slow and warmer conditions are needed for crops to show good growth. Spring drilling is well under way on lighter, well-drained land, but heavier soils are taking a while to dry out, and growers have to be patient and not go too early and damage soil structure.

Crop Watch: Plan early nutrition as temperatures rise

Crop Watch: Plan early nutrition as temperatures rise >More in © Tim Scrivener With spring on the horizon, our agronomists are assessing crops in the ground and planning fertiliser and other inputs for the coming weeks. Waterlogging because of yet another wet winter has affected many crops, although one positive is that the cold spell may have helped dampen down the disease threat. East: Toni Tunmore Agrovista (Norfolk/Suffolk) Here in Suffolk, the forecast is promising drier weather. Who would have thought autumn 2020 would turn out to be wetter than the one before? Lessons learned from 2019 mean more winter cereals were successfully established this season, with more flufenacet-based pre- or post-emergence residuals applied to control blackgrass and broad-leaved weeds. Where residuals have been applied, control looks promising to date.
