Thousands of people gathered in Rome on Saturday to support the law which aims to punish discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender and disability. The so-called Zan Law, named after a Democratic Party lawmaker and gay rights activist Alessandro Zan, aims to make discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender and disability punishable by imprisonment. The law was approved at the lower chamber in 2020, but got stuck at the senate due to opposition, lead by Matteo Salvini s right-wing League, which insists existing legislation against ethnic and religious discrimination is sufficient to protect against hate crimes.
