LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) organised a condolence reference in memory of late Olympian Naveed Alam who passed away earlier this week after a long battle with cancer. Former Olympians Chaudhry Akhtar Rasool, Manzoor Junior, Khawaja Juniad, Asif Bajwa, Danish Kaleem, former international goalkeeper Qadeer Bashir, national junior team coach Rana Zaheer and the entire probables of the national junior squad attended the reference. Akhtar Rasool hailed the services of Naveed as a fine full-back of the national team which won the gold medal in the 1994 World Cup. Akhtar urged the PHP to also hold similar references for other Olympians and officials, especially for former president Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Zafarullah Khan Jamali. IN December 2020, Zafarullah Khan Jamali, former prime minister of Pakistan, died. Prior to the verified news of his passing, a rumour circulated on several social and broadcast media that Mr Jamali had passed away while fighting for his life in the ICU. President Arif Alvi tweeted, ‘confirming’ the supposed death. His tweet was picked up in no time by all leading media outlets. The family shared their discomfort and frustration on hearing the rumour that had spread like wildfire during an already stressful time. The president’s tweet was later deleted and replaced with an apology to the family. As these chain of events unravelled, it left many questioning patient confidentiality and dignity in Pakistan.

Democracy becomes non-functional if we do not follow the basic principles dictated by it. Democracy if is not run under the rule of law then, unfortunately, it is worst than dictatorship as the deviation from the rule of law means vesting the entire powers with a single individual, who can use it for his interests fearlessly. This had been the main issue with our Pakistani branded democracy, which always remained under threat within its own created disloyal political fleet within the democratic system. Democracy through the power of vote leads to the democratic system for the government to be run through the rule of law and it all depends on how we develop an honest and transparent democratic system to serve the people and to create fear of law and not to rule the people by undermining their constitutional rights.
