Letter to the editor: People First Charter candidates will represent working people’s interests

As a young person living in Portland, I love this city and struggle with how hard it is to live here. The cost of rent exceeds what most jobs are paying. I am glad rent control and the minimum-wage increase passed last fall, but these are small steps toward what is truly needed.
That is why I plan to vote for the candidates recently endorsed by People First Charter. People First understands the struggle so many working people are experiencing and I trust they have done their research on who will best represent us on the Charter Commission, just as they offered the ballot initiatives the city wanted last November.

Over the weekend, while I was out canvassing in District 3, I came to the house of two folks I’ve known for a long time, John and Molly. Molly met me at the door and sat me down on her porch as I answered her questions about the Charter Commission.

Then she asked how I felt about the mailer from People First Charter that went out endorsing me and attacking one of my opponents. I explained that this mailer was sent by a PAC without my knowledge or consent; it did not reflect the message of my campaign, nor did I approve of the divisive rhetoric that it contained. Zack Barowitz is well qualified to serve on the city Charter Commission. He’s also a kind and helpful person.
Zack was canvassing the District 3 neighborhood when Shadow, our dog, got loose and ran off. So did Zack. He caught the runaway several blocks away.
The grateful Brenner family will vote for Barowitz on June 8.
