Risk of invasion
Some of those challenges can be controlled by indoor growing with greenhouses, which also helps address potential issues with the invasiveness of hemp.
Hemp produces a lot of small seeds that could be dispersed by birds, wind or other weather conditions. If hemp fields aren t tended to carefully, the plant has the potential to spread to unwanted areas.
“Hemp is kind of one of those classic examples of a potentially invasive species,” Brym said. “It still has a lot of what are called wild-type traits . We have seen hemp escape cultivation through some of our controlled studies, so the risk of invasion is still something that we want to be cautious of.”
