Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou led students from Dajiu Academy on a visit to Hunan University where he spoke of the Chinese constitution dividing Taiwan and mainland China, but stressed that the two were the Republic of China and China. In his final speech, Ma explained that the Taiwan area consisted of Taiwan, Penghu, Jinma, and that the mainland was outside of those territories, but still part of "our territory." Despite belonging to two separate areas, Ma encouraged both sides to work towards reducing barriers and enhancing communication. He also used the Hunan dialect to communicate with the mainland students present.
