The Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing the Easter Sunday attacks on Thursday sternly warned the Attorney General’s (AG) Coordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne for the manner in which she provided evidence to the Commission.
AG’s Coordinating Officer Nishara Jayaratne was summoned to the Commission to provide evidence in relation to a media release issued by the AG’s department on June 19, 2019 about the file submitted by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) on National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ) and Zahran Hashim.

Former Minister of Muslim Affairs M.H.A. Haleem today informed the PCoI probing Easter Sunday Commission though he was aware of National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ), he did not know that it was a violent organisation.
Testifying before the Commission, MP Haleem said that he was unaware of Aliyar Junction clash in Kattankudy in 2017 and about Zahran Hashim before Easter Sunday attacks.
He added that Thowheed Jamaat followers do not know how to interact with people of their own, and they were always trying to create conflicts.
The Intelligence reports revealed that Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen, the controversial doctor attached to the Kurunegala Hospital who was accused of performing sterilization operations had received funds from National Thowheed Jamaath (NTJ) organisation, former DIG in charge of Kurunegala District Kithsiri Jayalath on Thursday informed the PCoI probing Easter Sunday attacks.
Testifying before the Commission former DIG Jayalath said that Islamic extremists were powerful in the Kurunegala District and 226 suspects were arrested on charges of conducting extremist practices from the district after the Easter Sunday coordinated terror attack.
He said that information was published on media to arrest the suspects related to the Easter attack and the Police were able to arrest six suspects immediately after the attack.
