Israeli astronauts to test tech for next generation of space travel

Israeli astronauts to test tech for next generation of space travel An Israeli mission plans to send four astronauts on a SpaceX rocket early next year to test dozens of new technologies that could enable the next generation of space travel. The Rakia Mission, which will include Israeli businessman Eytan Stibbe, will test more than 40 locally developed technologies in the International Space Station, Israel’s ministry of science & technology said in a statement on Wednesday. Technologies being tested include super-fast-charging batteries and viscous liquid telescope lenses that pack more magnifying power in a smaller, simpler package, it said. The project is part of US firm Axiom Space’s bigger ambition to operate the first commercial space station. Space travel is poised to get a boost with companies like Axiom, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin trying to commercialise what was once reserved for government agencies. And a number of countries are angling to s

Israel, Palestine, and COVID-19 vaccines: Legal and moral obligations

While the headline was criticized, the article did refer to Palestinian autonomy and the Oslo Accords in the body of the text. Israel s legal responsibility and the Oslo Accords This is where things get complicated. It is argued that Israel does not hold a legal responsibility to vaccinate those under the Palestinian Authority s control. They cite the Oslo Accords a historic agreement signed by Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization in 1993 and 1995. The Oslo Accords granted the Palestinian people the right to self-determination and, consequently, created a Palestinian Authority (PA) tasked with partial self-governance in parts of Gaza and the West Bank.

How Israel got COVID-19 vaccines to 9% of citizens in under 2 weeks

Ariel Schalit/AP Photo In less than two weeks, Israel has provided vaccine doses to nearly 9% of its residents. By contrast, the US has gotten doses to .95% of its population, and the UK less than 1.5%.  Experts say Israel s small size, along with its aggressive vaccine procurement efforts and universal, centralized healthcare system put the country ahead.  Israel is far ahead of any other country in administering COVID-19 vaccines. As of Thursday, the nation had administered 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, meaning approximately 8.84% of its 9 million residents have gotten their first dose, according to Bloomberg s vaccine tracker. Health providers in Israel are administering doses to about 150,000 people per day.
