The rise of e-commerce in the country over the past year may have been driven by the pandemic, South Africa was arguably too slow in initially adopting e-commerce, chiefly because it appeared focused on the niche upper end of the market.
Thus, many retailers did not view it as a necessity. However, the advent of Covid-19 a year ago and the subsequent lockdowns changed things rapidly and dramatically.
Organisations across the board were found wanting in their ability to provide products and services under these new restrictions, with retailers and restaurants particularly hard-hit. Suddenly, e-commerce was on everybody’s radar, and in true SA fashion, organisations reacted quickly with unique, enterprising and exciting offerings for both consumers and business.
