On to the semifinals
On the second day of play in the quarterfinals of the New in Chess Classic, the three players who had taken the lead on the first day maintained their advantage.
In the match between Wesley So and Levon Aronian, the Armenian, who recently switched to the US Federation, had won the first set clearly 3-1. The first two games of the second set ended drawn, which meant Wesley So needed a win in the third game. But it was Aronian who scored a full point, ending the second set prematurely, as So could at most equalize in this set, but no longer the overall score.

A tough fight
On the second day of the final, rounds 5 to 9 of the all-play-all tournament were played. After day 1, Clichy and Deizisau were sharing the lead with six match points each, with the French slightly ahead by one board point.
Already the 5th round saw Deizsau taking the sole lead, as they defeated the women’s squad from Monte Carlo, while another German club, Hamburger SK, defeated Clichy.
The victory did not come easy for Deizisau, though, as they scored a single win (and three draws) against the winners of the Women’s European Club Cup. Georg Meier who finished the event with a remarkable 5/6 score defeated Aleksandra Goryachkina, a player who can normally hold her own against the (male-dominated) world’s top players:

Unique circumstances
About a week ago, the International Chess Federation announced the new dates for the World Championship match in which Magnus Carlsen will face the winner of the Candidates Tournament. With a prize fund of 2 million Euros, the event is scheduled to kick off on November 24 and last until December 16.
It was confirmed, as well, that the match will be held at Expo 2020 in Dubai. The World Expo, which was originally scheduled to start in October 2020, decided not to change the name of the massive event (to 2021) for marketing and branding purposes.
The press release by FIDE states: “The FIDE World Chess Championship will take place at the state-of-the-art Dubai Exhibition Centre, co-located at Expo 2020. The Championship will also include a series of side events, including exhibition matches and appearances by former champions and celebrity fans.”
