HONG KONG, May 6 (Xinhua) Asia-Pacific countries were on high alert on Thursday as India recorded a record 412,262 new COVID-19 cases and 3,980 deaths in the past 24 hours.
India s total tally surpassed 21 million and the death toll rose to 230,168, said the health ministry.
This is the second time this month that over 400,000 cases have been registered in a single day in India.
There are still 3,566,398 active cases in the country, with an increase of 79,169 through Wednesday.
The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) reported 6,637 new infections, bringing the total number of cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,080,172.

HONG KONG, April 26 (Xinhua) Asia-Pacific countries are facing growing cases of the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday as India recorded the highest daily spike of 352,991 new cases, taking the total to 17,313,163, while the Philippines reported over 1 million infections in total.
This was the fifth consecutive day when over 300,000 cases were registered in a single day.
According to the figures released by the health ministry, 2,812 deaths took place in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 195,123.
There are still a total of 2,813,658 active cases in the country, with an increase of 130,907 through Sunday, as 14,304,382 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals across the country.

HONG KONG, April 8 (Xinhua) Asia-Pacific countries are facing growing cases of the COVID-19 pandemic Thursday as India reported 126,789 new infections, the highest of this year, taking the total to 12,928,574.
This is the third time within this week when more than 100,000 new cases were recorded in India. Earlier, 103,558 new cases were reported on Monday, while 115,736 were reported on Wednesday.
Besides, 685 deaths were reported due to the pandemic since Wednesday morning, taking the total death toll to 166,862, said the ministry s data.
The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) reported 9,216 new infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 828,366.
