Veterans began . This actually started which stems from a documentary i did on the mississippi delta chinese. And i needed to find the right hook to tell the story of the Chinese Americans in the mississippi delta. Chinese American History is not sexy, so it took me almost 20 years to find the right way to tell this story, compelling enough to bring it a full audience. And i had the good fortune of meeting doctor Gwendolyn Gong who did a tremendous amount of research on the veterans, Service Personnel from mississippi delta. And from there, we discussed and talked about how to create a three part series that aired on pbs on the chinese and mississippi delta, and that got me interested in the world war ii veterans. So, honor and duty is really a compendium that all 22,000 plus Chinese Americans that served in world war ii, is that correct . Thats correct. This research was conducted over three years time. Actually, just a bit more than three years. We have been able to identify 22,827 w
This is the desert of western nevada, already wellknown for its Nuclear Tests by the Atomic Energy commission here at yucca flats. Adjoining this test site is an active aerial gunnery range. Ordered in 1955 by president ial order, 60 square miles of this prohibited area were set aside for a special purpose, as a narrow air corridor to reach the spot on the map. Air charts ordered closed, except from the chief of staff from the u. S. Air force. The name of the isolated spot in nevada is watertown and its very isolation is the greatest importance. The specialists that come off this transport are handpicked. They are checked every time they arrive at watertown. Overall security in the area is the highest yet to be maintained in this country, even higher than that of the manhattan project. Selection of watertown was dictated by several unique considerations. The area is isolated from prying eyes by the aec range with lethal reminders of past atomic explosions. Aec guards maintain regular p
There was no town or village here. There were neighboring farms. There was an anglican chapel where there is now the carolina inn. There was no town to speak of. On the day that they laid the cornerstone for the first diversity building, they had an auction of town lots. They understood that as the university was conceived, it would need a town around it to support it, provide businesses and a place to live. It became chapel hill and was born on the same day. The university was chartered in 1789. Ground broke for the first building in 1793. A year and a half later, 1795, the university opened. They had an Opening Ceremony in january of 1795. They had events on campus here. No students showed up. It took another few weeks for the First Student to arrive. He came from over 100 miles and he was the entire student body for two weeks until more students gradually came to campus. For the first century, it was a school for white men only. The 1890s that women were admitted. And then it starte
Cheryl i am an exhibit director and at the library of congress. Barbara i am the curator of this exhibit and an historian in the Manuscript Division of the library of congress. Cheryl this exhibition is a copresentation with the museum of the city of new york. It is the first time that the collections of the library of congress, the riis papers have been married with the photographs that are a stellar collection at the museum of new york. We picked the word copresentation carefully because the exhibition here actually follows an exhibit that was at the museum of new york and really, that exhibit, which was called, jacob riis revealing new yorks other half, was slightly different. It looks at riis in a slightly different way, concentrating more on his biography, more on his photography. Here we are looking at riis as the journalist, because that is the strength of our collection. The papers here number 3000 in the Manuscript Division and are really featured well in this exhibition and c
