Central Christchurch to be lit up for Matariki

The light festival replaced the popular Botanic D Lights event, which attracted 136,000 people when it was last held in 2018. Cokojic said Tīrama Mai – meaning to illuminate or bring light - would be the city’s first lighting event held specifically to coincide with Matariki. “We want it to grow to become a highly collaborative festival, with mana whenua guiding cultural elements and design.” The lighting trails would be open daily between 6pm and 11pm from June 25 to July 10. Installations would be set up around The Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery, Worcester Blvd, Victoria Square, the Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct, New Regent St and New Brighton.

GO NZ: An expert's guide to Christchurch's best buildings

GO NZ: An expert s guide to Christchurch s best buildings 28 Jan, 2021 03:30 AM 4 minutes to read Turanga, Christchurch s central library, is an anchor project in Cathedral Square. Photo / ChristchurchNZ NZ Herald Architectural writer and editor John Walsh gives his guide to the best buildings to look out for on a walk around Christchurch All cities are to some extent intentional but Christchurch, far more than most cities, didn t just happen. It was conceived in England, in the middle of the 19th century, as an Anglican settlement centred on a cathedral, bordered by a park and laid out as a rectangular grid of streets awaiting the buildings that would inevitably occur as prosperity caught up with colonial ambition.

Mulletman launches rival buskers festival for New Brighton and Akaroa

STACY SQUIRES/STUFF Busker Bexly Hoops finds a way to fit into a small box as part of the 2021 Bread & Circus festival in Christchurch. Christchurch performer Nathan Bonner, also known as Mulletman, has launched a new buskers festival that will run at the same time as its larger Bread & Circus rival. Bonner’s festival, which is called Salty Buskers Club, will feature six buskers performing in Akaroa on Thursday, Birdlings Flat on Friday, and New Brighton on Saturday and Sunday. The Akaroa event will also include an evening show starring all the performers. Bonner said he established the new event because he missed the New Brighton busking pitch and the busker evening shows that had been dropped since the Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival was revamped in 2018.

New Regent St packed for Bread & Circus festival opening weekend

Festival organisers estimate about 2000 people saw the New Regent St Spectacular over three shows on Saturday. The opening weekend of the Bread & Circus-Backyard Buskers Festival featured soldout shows and drew thousands to the streets of Christchurch despite New Zealand’s closed borders hitting tourist numbers. Festival director Scott Maidment said the opening weekend of the festival, which this year features exclusively Kiwi talent due to Covid-19 border restrictions, was a success. The Festival Gala hosted by the Topp Twins at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Sunday night was sold out, three shows by magician Jarred Fell at the Christchurch Casino also sold out, and about 400 people attended the Kids Comedy Gala on Sunday afternoon.
