Second annual Back the Blue rally held in Tavares

TAVARES Around 200 people gathered in Wooton Park on Saturday to march in support of law enforcement at the second annual Back the Blue rally in downtown Tavares.
Marchers carried both American and “thin blue line” flags and held signs supporting police as they gathered at the gazebo before walking along Ruby Street toward the Old Lake County Courthouse.
The rally comes after five days of testimony in the Derek Chauvin trial. Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, faces murder charges in the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Video from the incident shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd s neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin, who was fired, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges.
Paula Stegall Stinson, a 1966 Tavares High School graduate, joins an impressive list of more than 40 women in the Lake County Women's Hall of Fame. Each is honored for her significant contributions to and for the citizens of Lake County. Stinson's mother, Imogene Stegall, was inducted into the group in 2005. She is Lake's former longtime supervisor of elections.
