After taking to social media to share her experiences, Shareena says she faced retaliation online that left her feeling ostracised and further marginalised . So how do you deal with something as insidious as workplace racism when the stakes are so high? And whose responsibility is it to raise the issue? We spoke to people who have been in this position, as well as the experts for their advice.

Another Neighbours actor speaks out about racism on the set

Actor Sharon Johal has become the latest cast-member to allege direct, indirect and casual racism on the set of Neighbours calling her experience painful and problematic. Ms Johal who worked on the show for four years wrote on her website that she heard references about herself as the black one and blackie.   She said she spoke up to management about the racist comments but no further action was taken.  Ms Johal said this could be a transformative moment for the show after First Nations actors Shareena Clanton and Meyne Wyatt also made allegations about their time on Neighbours. Ms Clanton announced on social media this week that was she having a mental health break after calling out her experiences via social media last week.

TONY MCDONOUGH/Sydney Morning Herald Shareena Clanton has said the set of Australia’s long-running soap Neighbours is a ‘culturally unsafe’ place. Indigenous actor Shareena Clanton has accused long-running soap Neighbours of being a “culturally unsafe place” where the N-word and other racially charged terms were bandied around in the name of humour. Ms Clanton, whose heritage includes Wongatha/Yamatji and Noongar/Gitja on her mother’s side and Etowah Cherokee, Blackfoot and African American on her father’s side, said that calling out the language and behaviour she encountered on the show “often left me ostracised and further marginalised”.
