In his first instalment about the history of Colchester’s “New Town Estate”, dating back to 1880, Sir Bob Russell stopped where his tour went from Winnock Road down Charles Street to Kendall Road. His descriptive walk now continues in this second and final instalment. THE New Town Estate, designed by James Goodey, who lived in the centre of his unique development of houses for “all classes” in Victorian Britain, featured among the 470 dwellings several corner shops, a public house (originally The Blue Boar but now The New Town Tavern), in Kendall Road, and The Royal Mortar, in Military Road.

Linas Marcinkevicius, 19, was part of a group captured on CCTV in Colchester launching an attack on innocent passer-by Steven Brooks-Dowsett. Ipswich Crown Court heard footage showed the group of youths had been on the prowl around the town, accosting members of the public in January last year. After some words were exchanged, Mr Brooks-Dowsett walked away. The group launched its attack, pushing him to the ground and launching kicks while he lay on the floor.

Steven Brooks-Dowsett attended Ipswich Crown Court to look his attacker in the eye after he was assaulted in Colchester town centre. The attack, carried out in January last year, was carried out by Linas Marcinkevicius and a group of his thuggish friends. Mr Brooks-Dowsett suffered a broken ankle, multiple contusions and a concussion. In a victim impact statement read aloud in court, Mr Brooks-Dowsett said the attack had permanently changed his life.
