we re echoing words that eric garner said right before he was killed. a bunch of organizations are coming together. so, they do have demand. they want an end to broken windows policing. they want an end to the police department essentially policing itself. so, you know, as they re trying to figure out what the next steps are, first it s mobilizing the people and that s what they re doing now. thank you so much for the update on that story. thanks for having me, ronan. we want you to weigh in on one of the big questions today. will the use of police body cameras a policy that many proposed in the wake of these stories about police actually make the difference that one would hope. weigh in on twitter using rfd yes. if you think police body cameras will work and no if you don t think they ll make the difference. obviously, in the wake of this eric garner decision, hey, having footage isn t going to be a panacea. look forward to hearing your results on that. we ll keep you updated on
is a change to the abusive patterns of this kind of broken-windows policing. i think they can still effectively enforce the law without doing what they re doing. that s the question, right? i mean, there s been in the kind of doctrine that a lot of people have adopted there s a connection between them right? we talk about broken windows. the idea is if you let people do things like graffitis, jump turnstiles, that leads to an at tuesday of per mismissiveness that needs to murder. right. you have to go upstream what upstream means is grabbing people for minor offenses. right. what this policy eventually leads to inevitably is a situation where police are forced to go out and create hundreds of thousands of contacts with the populations in certain parts of certain cities. and what this does is it creates this endless stream of particularly misdemeanor arrests and offenses, people who are stopped in the street for things like on instructing pedestrian
thank you for joining me. fast forward to what s planned today. there are on-going protests, including #thisstopsnowtoday, expected at one of the sites in the city. what can you tell us about that? reporter: organizers are developing plans of action, how to respond to nonindictment of the officer that killed eric garner. there s a big protest in foley square, under the banner this stops today. harkening back to words he said before he was killed, this stops today. they have a list of demands. full accountability for officers that killed eric garner. they want the police department to eliminate broken windows policing. they want changes to the way the police investigate themselves when these situations happen. and just about an hour ago, eric garner s mother was here, she was thankful for the people across the city and country who are coming out and supporting not just her son but all of the other young black men killed across the country this summer.
