TAHLEQUAH â During its April 12 meeting, the Tribal Council unanimously approved the Wilma P. Mankiller and Charlie Soap Water Act, which calls for research to determine the reasons some Cherokee Nation citizens still do not have adequate access to water utilities and systems.
âItâs huge for our districts,â said Tribal Councilor Canaan Duncan. âItâs huge throughout the rest of the 14 counties. Work has already begun in Adair County and I know it has in other places. I am just super thankful to be a part of that.â
The act, which says that âbarriers to reliable water supply and wastewater disposal for some Cherokee citizens remain,â authorizes a minimum of $2 million more than normal general fund allocations to improve water access starting in fiscal 2022 and continuing each year.
