Mob Wines: Pinot from a Sopranos Star, Collectibles from Mobster John Gotti

“[This wine] commemorates the end of our pandemic podcast project,” de Matteo said, “but it also celebrates trying new things and being able to say ‘bye-bye’ when the jeans don’t fit, instead of trying to push too hard.” De Matteo views the Pinot as a celebration of leaving the “rat race” to focus on friendships and relax with wine, a familiar concept for the Sopranos cast. “We always drank real wine [on set] during big dinner scenes,” she revealed. The late John Gotti s wines were a hot commodity at Enoteca LIC. (Tony D Aiuto) Lafite, DRC, Pétrus and More from the Cellar of Mobster John Gotti

Rocky Pond Winery 2018 Reserve Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon, $49

Rocky Pond Winery 2018 Reserve Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon, $49 On long-standing item on David Dufenhorst’s wine-theme bucket list has been a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir project, so the Washington state winery owner/grower worked with Keeler Vineyard near Amity, Ore., for this four-barrel release. The fanciful and fascinating aroma profile offers huckleberry, cherry jam and blueberry taffy with Baker’s chocolate and cola behind those. Inside, it’s dark and rich with blueberry and blackcurrant flavors, backed by mint and a nibble of cherry skin for a big and fruity finish. Suggested pairings from Rocky Pond’s culinary team in Woodinville and Chelan include Classic Pasta Carbonara with Pancetta, Confit Duck Leg with Sweet Potato Puree, Mustard Greens and Pomegranates or a Reuben sandwich.

What I ve Been Drinking of Late, Part 6

J Vineyards Cuvee 20 Healdsburg’s J Vineyards has long made one of my favorite go-to sparkling wines. Its new J Vineyards Cuvee 20 Brut NV ($38), of which I received a sample, is a total pleaser with yeasty, apple, and spice notes. Medium-bodied, it has a slight creaminess yet plenty of crisp acidity. It would make magic alongside a cold seafood platter, a goat cheese salad with bitter greens, or even an egg salad croissant sandwich. Cheers: This bubbly will ring in the New Year in style. Given the year we’ve had, you deserve to uncork a special bottle to mark the end of a supremely challenging 2020, and to toast to a hopefully much brighter and lighter 2021.
