Court overrules Trump administration's refusal to protect Pacific walrus

Court overrules Trump administration s refusal to protect Pacific walrus By Bob Egelko © S.A. Sonsthagen/Associated Press A photo from the U.S. Geological Survey shows adult female Pacific walruses on an ice flow with young walruses in the Eastern Chukchi Sea in Alaska. A federal appeals court overruled the Trump administration s refusal to protect the Pacific walrus Thursday and ordered the Biden administration to consider protection for a species whose icy habitat is threatened by climate change. The Pacific walrus, the largest flipper-footed marine mammal in the Arctic, inhabits continental shelf waters of the Bering and Chukchi Seas off the coast of Alaska. It climbs onto ice to hunt prey, travel to new feeding grounds, give birth, raise its young and avoid predators.
