ROBERT BUCKAND: Getting tough on crime, my 10k challenge and farewell to a brilliant councillor

Robert Buckland - UK Parliament official portraits 2017. For far too long, our justice system has been beset by complex and confusing laws, which the public often feel fail in their most essential aims – to keep them safe and properly punish offenders. In my role as Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, I have set out a plan for a radical sentencing overhaul to crack down on crime and protect the public by ensuring that dangerous criminals are kept in prison for longer. The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill seeks to equip the police with the powers and tools they need to protect themselves and the public, while overhauling sentencing laws to keep serious sexual and violent offenders behind bars for longer, and placing greater emphasis on rehabilitation to better help offenders to turn their lives around and prevent further crimes.

Dean Russell backs anti-protest Police Bill

Watford s MP has explained why he backed a controversial police bill that restricts the right to protest. The Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill has sparked debate after the Met was criticised for its handling of the Sarah Everard vigil over the weekend. Despite strongly-worded opposition, mainly from the Labour Party, legislation for the policing bill passed by 369 votes to 263 yesterday (March 16). This means police chiefs will be able to impose a start and finish time to protests, set noise limits and apply the rules to a demonstration of a single person. Some groups have feared that these measures could be taken to the extreme to silence the freedom of protest and speech, particularly in rightful demonstrations against the government.

What measures are in the Bill which promises to overhaul the justice system?
