they make up about 38% of the electorate. white noncollege voters, huge youngkin territory. right? 76% you would expect to see this. this is part of that trump base. mcauliffe, 24%. that is 36% of the overall electorate right there and that s a big youngkin group. he is winning them by much bigger than mcauliffe is narrowly ahead among white college-educated voters. latino voters. mcauliffe, 69%. youngkin, 30% and they make up about 5% of the electorate in virginia today. and finally, independents. we are going to watch how independents are doing all the time but right now, youngkin is winning independents 52% to 47% for mcauliffe. that s 30% of the electorate, independents. joe biden was winning independents by a big margin just a year ago. now, youngkin is ahead here by five points. keep your eye on this demographic throughout the night. all right.
compared to 2017 when it was 43%. there is no drop off. it s the same. he is still a factor in voters minds. what type of voters i think they can hear you in virginia tonight. what kind of voters i mean, can youngkin win over some voters that the former president couldn t? and what might that mean nationally for midterms and beyond? i don t know if i necessarily need the miecrophone for this. i probably yell enough. but look. it s white voters with a college degree. look at the net favorability ratings among white voters with a college degree. among youngkin versus trump and look at white voters without a college degree. among white-college voters, youngkin is basically even. look at trump at minus 16 points. that is a 16-point difference. youngkin is basically holding the white noncollege base that trump got, look at that just a two-point difference. they are both quite popular among them and the i think the question is what glenn youngkin doing in virginia able to translate
their 18-year-old goes off to florida state, they re going to come back not being super psyched about their parents political views. that s a real thing that happens in the world. i m sure parents have said that to desantis at some fund-raiser. it s a microcosm of a bigger thing, which is our politics are increasingly dividing along the lines of education. even when you control for other things, some demographics, across race or income, people with higher levels of education are more liberal. those with less education are more conservative. pew research, in fact, found from 2015 to 2019, the share of republicans and those who lean republican, saying colleges have a negative effect on the country, went from 37% to 59%. this educational divide is particularly sharp on white people. in 2020, joe biden won 51% of white college graduates while getting 32% of support from white noncollege graduates. big divide. we see that educational divide every election night, when we
that number is actually down a little bit from our last poll. republicans think that s progress. it s inside if margthe margin o. thinking about 2020 and the political basis of both parties, nearly 6 in 10 americans with a college graduation degree say impeach or remove the president. only 47% of those who have not graduated from college say that. white noncollege graduates, a key part of the president s base, only 36% nationwide say impeach and remove the president. this is interesting. have the democrats prosecuted their case against the president? well, 53% do believe he has used the presidency improperly. 56%, that s a big number, say he did it to benefit himself politically. but only 48% say there s enough evidence to warrant the full impeachment process, meaning a house impeachment, senate removal from office. on that second part, a senate conviction, the majority say no.
democratic electorate. among self-declared liberals it s a three-way tie. biden surprisingly perhaps making a run for these voters. sanders and warren, they all have an equal share of self-declared liberal voters. the biden advantage comes from moderate conservative democrats. he s at 34% compared to 9% and 7% for sanders and warren. we also asked aboutt electability factor. are you looking for a candidate who can beat trump or share yourpics on issues. 54% say they want somebody with a strong chance of defeating the president. 39%, they re looking for somebody who shares their position on the issues. but take a look at some of the demographic groups. white noncollege educated voters they split roughly evenly with someone who shares their position on the issues. but if you re a college graduate overwhelmingly you re looking
