Objections to new homes at Overcombe Drive, Preston, Weymouth

OBJECTIONS have continued over proposed new homes on a Weymouth ‘skyline’ site. An initial outline application for the plot at Overcombe Drive has been replaced by a full planning application for four homes, rather than six, semi-detached home. Developers say they have made the changes to take into account public criticism of the initial designs. More than 20 letters of objection were lodged with Dorset Council against the first proposal with both Weymouth Town Council and the Weymouth Civic Society asking Dorset Council to reject it. The second application has brought a similar response - although there have been fewer objections after the site was described differently than the initial proposal and was more difficult to find on the council website.

Weymouth rail station revamp plans submitted

Revamp plans for Weymouth rail station have been officially submitted to Dorset Council and are now open for public comments. The £600,000 Weymouth Station Gateway plan would see the station forecourt reconfigured, changes to car parking and flow of traffic, as well as the creation of a ‘pocket park’ linking King Street and the Jubilee Retail Park. The project also includes new sustainable transport links for bus passengers and cyclists, and improvements to pedestrianisation. Comments on the proposal - submitted by Dorset Coast Forum - remain open until the end of April. The plans have been submitted following a public consultation which revealed overwhelming support for the work.

Campaign to save Brewers Quay in Hope Square, Weymouth

THE community is rallying to save Weymouth s iconic Brewer s Quay from dereliction after the owners of the building fell into administration. Weymouth Civic Society said it is ghastly to watch the building rot away, and has backed a campaign to bring it back into mixed use for the benefit of the community. Two Save Brewers Quay groups have been set up with the shared objective of raising funds and rallying public support. Organiser Paul Sherry said he is disgusted to see the building fall into disrepair - and has already received a phenomenal response and offers of financial backing. He said: I grew up in Weymouth and love that area - I want to see the building renovated and being put back to a community asset - Hope Square has so much history and we should be making the most of it.
