The United Way of Carroll has announced $34,000 in funding for 2021 was allocated during their January meeting. Executive Director, Jen Munson, says they were surprised to see an increase in donations by about $10,000 over previous years; especially during a pandemic.
Munson says they are very proud that all of the money they raise stays in Carroll County. Westside State Bank, American Home Shield, New Way Ford and United Bank of Iowa pay the national fees, freeing up the money for local donations. Some saw an increase in service needs this year because of COVID.
Donations have been earmarked for more than 13 organizations. These include the Carroll County Nest, Carroll Area Child Care Center, Catholic Charities, Region XII for discount taxi tickets for the elderly and disabled and Carroll County Home Care Aid Services. Munson says the latter was one that saw increased need.
The Wall Lake City Council is predicting their overall property tax levy will be decreasing for the seventh consecutive year. According to City Clerk, Chris Rodman, Wall Lake’s total levy for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 is $9.50 per $1,000 of taxable valuation and will decrease by just under a penny in the coming year. He says this is largely due to rising property values over the last decade.
The city council is still working to finalize the FY22 budget’s figures. Fortunately, revenues have not been impacted substantially by the COVID-19 pandemic so significant budget cuts will not be necessary. However, Rodman notes, they do have a large infrastructure project planned for next summer.
Raffle tickets are still available for the Wall Lake Community Center’s first annual Christmas drawing. According to Clerk, Chris Rodman, the drawing is scheduled to take place on Saturday morning. Originally, organizers had hoped to host a variety of holiday themed activities in the Community Center prior to the drawing, but COVID-19 concerns required them to dial back on what they had planned. However, he says there are still plenty of reasons to stop by for some fun on Saturday morning.
