Westport residents upset over cell tower proposal

WESTPORT A proposal for a 150-foot monopole style cell tower 50 feet from Drift Road and nearby the historic Westport Point has caused quite a stir in the community.  Proponents say it will help fill communication gaps around Westport Point and Drift Road, including 5G cell coverage in an area that only gets 4G coverage. Opponents say this tower, which will be dressed as a pine tree, would harm the aesthetics and pose environmental and other risks.  Opponents also say that other alternatives should and could be explored for this AT&T cell service structure, which should not be sited in an agricultural and residential district district that is a short distance from a historic district.

Walter Moniz

WESTPORT When selectman candidate Walter Moniz began knocking on doors in February to talk with residents and businesses about his candidacy, he was a bit taken aback when some residents questioned if he lives in town a requirement for candidacy.  Moniz is running in a three-person race for two seats held currently by Ann Boxler and Richard Brewer. There will also be a race for a Housing Authority seat: incumbent Veronica Beaulieu will face off against challenger Richard Ziomek at the April 13 Annual Town Election.   On Tuesday, Moniz and his campaign manager, former Selectman Craig Dutra, set out to squelch residency rumors and stay ahead of what Dutra called “a whisper campaign” against Moniz. They held a press event on the lawns of 63 Prospect Ave. within Westport Harbor, a stone mansion that is a six-home condominium development: Pondmeadow Condominiums.
