The wildfire threatening Hay River and Kátł'odeeche First Nation hasn’t moved any closer to the communities thanks to smokey weather, favourable winds and firefighting tactics.
Two fires threatening the city of Yellowknife are now considered as being held instead of out-of-control, but officials say they still don’t know when it might be safe for residents to come home as the territory continues to battle hundreds of fires.
Despite challenging conditions on Sunday that pushed a massive wildfire toward Hay River, N.W.T., fire officials say no additional buildings have burned. Early Monday morning, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for the region around Hay River and Enterprise.
Heat warnings are in place for a number of areas in the Northwest Territories, including one community where wildfires are blazing just 1.5 kilometres away from the town s centre.
