Just after 3 00 a. M. Here on the east coast and at least 16 people have reportedly been killed. More than 7 million are without power as sandy now is moving inland across pennsylvania. We want to run down the latest development as cross the midatlantic and the northeast and lets start in new jersey which took the brunt of this superstorm when it came ashore. Atlantic city and cape may have been absolutely inundated with water. Further north in jersey city reports of building collapses, the Oyster Creek Nuclear plant has been put on elevated alert amid high water. In new york, all of Lower Manhattan below 39th street is without power. Some of that caused by an explosion at a con ed substation. Right now new york city is seeing more Power Outages than at any time in its history including two out of every three people on long island. Its also forced the evacuation of the nyu Medical Center after the generator there went out. Further south
Strikes in the last 15 minutes along route 40, the Atlantic City expressway and again during the rush hour youre dealing with a wall of water that initially comes down at rates of between three and 4inches per hour, so it is blinding rain and as we head down to the south, were also dealing with some pretty intense storms stretching through dover as well and you can see those rainfall rates an additional two to 4 inches of rain there and, again, this is where we have the most intense severe storms at the present time, over 150 or so lightning strikes from millville to dover just in the last 15 minutes. In addition to again the severe storms were dealing with, a lot of water on the roadways. Meteorologist Melissa Magee has more on that story and some of the further guidances across much of the area. We have a severe Thunderstorm Risk for the next several hours. Well be monitoring those thunderstorms for anything developing because thats whats going to happen. So as we look through philadelphia, the greatest threat is tomorrow morning. Although we could see some storms this evening. Especially in some of the northern suburbs and Lehigh Valley with a big threat and its going to be warm and humid overnight. Big changes coming over the weekend. Well get into those details in a bit. Northe at five to 10 miles an hour, so these cells have all been moving slowly so we are racking up in the rainfall department. Check this out across Cumberland County we have pick up 2 inches of rainfall and some areas in just 22 minutes, others in just 45 minutes, that is why we have a localized flood threat south of the city but i will keep my eye on the radar over next several hours and do have that backup plan and have umbrella just in case scout out where you would head if you do see one of these cells, in a way in Center City Philadelphia which i dont necessarily think it it is likely but possible as we head in the next couple hours as we head out to the fire works.
