Group heading south following suspected suicides in Invercargill

“We are here to help save lives,” Hepi said. “Our job is to connect our mate, who is struggling, to the support they need.” The organisation’s goal was to get men talking about their feelings and emotions, rather than bottling up stress. “There could be a marriage break-up or custody [battle] or financial problems, but males tend to go into their cave. We are trying to break down those stereotypes . replace words like harden-up with open up,” Hepi said. Wendy Hansen, who is helping organise the Mates in Construction visit to Invercargill, said she was concerned at the suspected suicides in Invercargill in recent months.

Obituary: Elise Marie "Corky" Campbell (1940-2021) | Community

Elise Marie vonScheele Campbell, fondly called Corky by all, passed away peacefully into the care of her Lord and Savior in Honolulu on March 7, 2021, at the age of 80. She was born in the Alutiiq village Afognak, Alaska, on July 4, 1940, to Herman and Marie Loe vonScheele. The family moved to Seattle in 1942, where Corky grew up on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill. Ever charismatic, Corky was chosen to be a Seafair Princess in 1958 and afterward she attended the University of Washington and Everett Junior College. After school, Corky trained to become a flight attendant and worked for Pacific Northern Airlines and Northwest Orient Airlines as a flight attendant and then trainer, accumulating over 38 years’ service before her retirement in 2000. Traveling was a passion of Corky’s and her time as a flight attendant allowed her to travel the world; her favorite destinations were to Osaka, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea, where she fell in love with the Asian arts and culture. His Compassion gave food for 10 million meals in 2020 in Marion County

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, His Compassion Food Bank isn’t hard to find. Just look for the line of cars parked adjacent to northeast Jacksonville Road. The line often stretches up to three-quarters of a mile back toward County Road 326 as people wait in the outreach’s food distribution drive-through car line.  In 2020, His Compassion volunteers took in and then distributed over 13 million pounds of food in the drive-throughs and also provided bulk amounts of food for 82 local community agencies and churches. Food bank officials say this year is starting off with increased need spurred by the coronavirus pandemic. “We are seeing people come through our car line for the first time needing food because they lost their job. The need for nutritious food  especially for children  has also increased greatly in the remote areas of the county, said Les Bowen, secretary- treasurer for His Compassion.

PATHways Provides Second Chance for Pregnant Moms Struggling with Substance Use Disorder

Listen PATHways program director Jason Joy and peer support specialist Marie Vice pose in front of UK s Polk-Dalton Clinic, home to the PATHways program. UK Photo | Mark Cornelison   From UK Now: After more than a decade of struggling with addiction, Fleming County resident Marie Vice found herself at a low point, taking herself to a local hospital in October 2015. She was pregnant, still actively using drugs, and suffering from extreme withdrawal. “The doctor came in and said, ‘You need to let me get you somewhere where they can take care of the baby,’” she said. “’Because you’re about to lose him.’”
