Weather hits and it is covering the country coast to coast really. flooding rains from california to nevada, so much that even roads in the desert are turning into rivers. look at these pictures, just what the folks in minneapolis do not need, more snow. in eastern massachusetts, now, blinding snow causing more than a share of accidents and messy commutes. bonnie schneider, can we expect this weather to be as bad as it is, leading right up to christmas day? i think so. some places, of course, want to see that snow for a white christmas, but winter actually begins today, tony, tonight 6:38 eastern time. we re feel like it s already winter. in many locations. the winter season in california is the rainy season. a roaring start in southern california. orange county through san diego and northward toward l.a., we re seeing the rain nonstop. records have already been shattered. we have a live picture of los angeles to show you. overcast picture, that s because the rain continues to fall.
Warm destination between my weather hits. probably not a good thing. i don t know. we can t lose you here, bill. you re not allowed to take vacation. didn t they tell you that. i haven t gotten that memo let. let s talk about temperatures. still very cold. especially new england. windchills, 6 in pittsburgh, 10 at boston. 18 in new york. 8 in philadelphia so there s still one more really cold morning to get through. skies are relatively snow-free. there s a couple baupdzs near syracuse and utica but do have snow that will be moving in through areas of virginia during the day. not expecting a lot of snow or any for that area from boston to new york to philly but d.c. through virginia is where you will get snow. just in d.c. but richmond could get 3 to 5. obviously cold today. light snow in d.c. watch out also for areas of kentucky, and indiana and illinois for freezing rain this morning. all right, bill.
Into the northeast, also could see some showers and pop-up thunderstorms. one to two inches in a short period of time possible here. detroit, cleveland, pittsburgh all seeing some wet weather. there s a storm across the rockies as it continues to move north and eastward, we ll see the severe weather for today across the dakotas through nebraska with a threat of large hail. have some damaging winds, maybe isolated tornadoes. watch for that. there s the precipitation accumulation. 6 to 12 inches for the northern rockies and a little bit of rain for the central and northern plains. there are your highs today. big ridge of high pressure bringing beautiful conditions across the southern and central plains and the southeast although the allergies really, really bad this time of year, unfortunately. back to you guys. back to my beer! oh. thank you very much. good luck. i think these weather hits will be less and less substantive as we go along. hiccup! thank you, janice. ok, the dow
Perhaps a day or so prior to a storm, they start canceling large numbers of flight so is they can gets the airplanes and the crews where they need to be and that way there isn t any surprises when the weather hits. that also allows passengers to make other plans and take care of their travel, a. arrangements before they get to the airport. it used to be you showed up at the airport and find out your flight is cancelled. now you can find out the day before. a step in the right direction but a lot of people spending the night at airways. thank you, dan. the cold snap, smashing all kinds of records in wisconsin. minus 18 in green bay. we re not even talking with wind chills. to meteorologist janice dean on how long the deep freeze is going to last. we have another mass of arctic air moving in and bringing us even colder temperatures. this could be historic cold.
